Charges against Marine Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani were dismissed earlier today by military judge Col. Steven Folsom. The charges were dismissed without prejudice which means they can be refiled at a later date. However the judge excluded Marine Forces Central Command from future involvement.

Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani was basically accused of failing to investigate Haditha Iraqi killings.

The Haditha killings sometimes referred to as the Haditha massacre refers to an incident that occurred November 19, 2005 in Haditha, a city in the western Iraq province of Al Anbar, where 24 Iraqi men, women and children were killed by US Marines. At least 15 of those killed were noncombatant civilians. It has been alleged that the killings were retribution for the attack on a convoy of United States Marines with an improvised explosive device that killed Lance Corporal Miguel Terrazas.

I am not sure we will ever know the truth about the incident so I am not ranting or raving. I hate to think of any military service member being brought up on charges but I also know that sometimes lines are blurred in combat and civilians pay the price. Marines pride themselves on being outstanding defenders of freedom, so I hope it is not true that they open fired on civilians.
