Gardening has always been popular with a small segment of the population but recent events has made anyone who is paying attention to the news and world events take a closer look at gardening, not just as a hobby but as a way of life.
Container gardens have become extremely popular the last few years because just about everyone has room for at least one pot of herbs or a hanging basket of strawberries. The balcony garden with pots of tomatoes is hugely popular. And will probably be more popular this year with the recent salmonella scare with certain varieties of tomatoes.
Houseplants are very good at cleaning the air but nobody really considers houseplants gardening. I say we can dub growing house plants the act of clean air gardening. Why buy big bulky and expensive machines to clean and purify your air when there are many beautiful houseplants that can do the job for the small cost of weekly watering and a little Miracle Grow fertilizer.
Using house plants as a clean air garden will be cheaper, no filters to buy and no expensive repair bills. You will get the benefit of their beauty and the health benefit of their ability to calm us and relieve stress.
A pretty pot and some potting mix along with some free cuttings from your grandmother’s houseplants (because we all know Grandma was smart and has been using houseplants as a clean air garden for years) and you are all set up with an environmentally friendly way to cut back on air pollution. If you don’t have a friend or family member to snag some houseplant cuttings from, don’t fret because houseplants are inexpensive at your local garden center.

Wow, great idea. I had never considered simple houseplants as gardening but I did know of their health benefits with cleaning the air. So I think the term “clean air gardening” is very appropriate.
my wife has so many plants on pots, I don’t even know what are those plants name. She is a ‘tonatoes addict’ too, I’m sure she has more then 10 pots of tomatoes on her “hanging garden”. ![]()
