Lorenzo Odone, who doctors said would die in childhood, has passed away. He lived 20 years longer than expected, mainly due to the dedication of his parents Augusto and Michaela Odone.
Lorenzo Odone’s parent’s battle to save him from a nerve disease was brought into the public consciousness with the movie “Lorenzo’s Oil.”
Lorenzo Odone was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy, generally referred to as ALD, at the age of 6. Doctors told his parents that the disease, caused by a genetic mutation, would cause Lorenzo’s neurological system to break down and that he would die within two years.
This post is a RAVE for Lorenzo Odone’s parents and the sacrifices they made for their son. Not only did they make a difference for him but their research has helped many others who suffer from ALD.
The treatment that is made from olive and rapeseed oils, which was patented by Augusto Odone, can prevent onset of the disease’s symptoms for most boys who receive an ALD diagnosis according to a study done in 2005.
The world is a better place due Augusto and Michaela Odone. I am glad they were afforded the leeway to care for their child the way they saw fit. Today CYS (Children and Youth) authorities probably would have taken Lorenzo from their care because they didn’t just sit back and follow the doctor’s advice.
