Cuban doctors have trained with physicians from Belgium to learn how to perform sex change operations. Cuba had carried out a successful sex-change operation in 1988 but controversy surrounded the sex change surgery and no further sexual reassignment operations were performed.
Sexual reassignment surgery is very expensive. On top of that sex change operations are hard to qualify for if you go the medically approved route. Years of pretreatment occur before most sex-change surgeries are authorized. Counseling and things like hormone therapy are needed years in advance.
President Raul Castro, who succeeded Fidel, his elder brother, in February has implemented many new policies that show Cuba is moving forward. Raul’s daughter, Mariela Castro, heads Cuba’s National Center for Sex Education so nepotism is still an issue.
A big rave to President Raul Castro for taking such bold steps.
Of all the things that you would think to see coming in the this new regime for Cuba, this is not something I thought would be on the top of the list! I had the opportunity to watch this progress in person with the spouse of a person I worked with. He was transitioning from a man to a woman and blogged about his experience and his surgery along with lots of pictures on his/her website. I wonder how many people will be taking advantage of this new service availble in Cuba?
I wonder when this will become available with American Insurance companies! It seems like such a struggle to get even decent health insurance these days. When looking into private insurance for my own family I’ve found that it would be a minimum of $300 per month for cheap health insurance and that it would still cost us $5000 out of pocket for our medical expenses before the cheap health insurance would even kick in. I was amazed at the procedures that the health insurance companies wouldn’t cover, in fact, maternity health coverage was one that was frequently not under the plan. I kept wondering what would happen if you got pregnant while on the cheap health insurance plan, would they just not pay?
