I bought RhondaHolland.com awhile back to make is easier for people to track me down. I am amazed at how many of my former unit members have actually found me via a Google search. And even happier that they took the time to do so. It is days like today that I miss them more than ever.
About an hour ago I got a telephone call from someone I served with in Japan back in the late 80’s - early 90’s, he was quick to wish me a happy Memorial Day and it brought a tear to my eye. He served in a special ops unit and has lost many friends who served in some of the most dangerous places on Earth for a soldier. I remember the nights when we sat around drinking beer asking all the questions service members ask themselves when they actually have time to reflect. I think in the end we still feel it was our duty to serve and we do not regret it.
Both he and I are disabled vets, though mine is a minor injury. I was extremely happy to hear that he is doing much better. I wish all my fellow vets were as lucky. Happy Memorial Day to all of them and to the families of all the veterans who gave their lives.
With that, here is today’s mini rant:
Support our troops. Instead of spending $5 on a magnet for your car, take the time to send a care package to someone in the war zone. You won’t believe how much it will mean to the service member who receives it.
If you do not have the money to send a care package, why not spend a few hours visiting with some of the wounded soldiers at the closest VA home or hospital? Donate some books or some cookies, just reach out and let the soldiers know you really care. Thank you!
Thanks for the reminder that Memorial Day is not just bbq day. It’s hard to appreciate that the US is at war, a real deadly war, not a Lou Dobbs campaign. With all the criticism of US policy we should recall why there is no British Empire, Spanish Empire, German Reich, Japanese Empire, Soviet Bloc, or Caliphate (yet!).
I grew up in Norfolk, VA, and the military is a big part of my life. I have so much respect for anyone who serves or has served in our military. Thank you.
