Ricki Lake is standing up to the medical establishment on the issue of giving birth at home instead of in a birthing center, hospital, or other type of medical facility. Good for Ricki Lake! I’m with you all the way.
Ricki Lake’s documentary, “The Business of Being Born,” is about the maternity care system. In the documentary Ricki Lake is shown giving birth to her second son, Owen, in her Manhattan apartment bathtub. It seems the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released a statement that says the home is not the safest setting for having a baby and names Ricki Lake specifically.
A similar issue was recently brought up in my local area regarding the use of midwives instead of doctors. Of course several doctors had to voice their opinion about the child possibly having a medical emergency that couldn’t be handled at home. Well I hate to tell these good doctors but there are plenty of medical problems that cannot be handled even at a hospital. Some babies are always going to die.
With all the reports of medical screw ups and the number of diseases spread at hospitals, I fail to see why parents opting to deliver at home should be looked down upon as some sort of freaks or as people who don’t value the health of their unborn child. If anything I think the opposite is true. These parents usually weigh the information and make an informed decision.
I agree with Ricki Lake’s comment that “Home birth was around long before hospitals were taking over — and I just think women need to know (the information) so that they can make the best choice for them.”
This issue really is all about choice. I admire doctors and their many skills. However I am getting tired of some of the scare tactics I see being used. If every single hospital closed tomorrow babies would still be born and most would survive the ordeal no matter whether they were born in a bath tub or the back seat of a car.
It’s such an emotive issue that consumes parents to be for 9 months, but is easily forgotten once it’s all over. I’m glad to see Ricki Lake making an issue of it.
