Construction on the Texas Governors Mansion started way back in 1854. Bad weather caused construction delays and put the mansion opening six months behind schedule. Texas Governors Mansion opened on June 14, 1856.
Texas Governors Mansion was built in the Greek Revival architectural style by master builder Abner Cook. The original mansion blueprint included 6,000 square feet and was divided into only 11 rooms. Indoor plumbing wasn’t around back then - so no bathrooms! Hard to imagine such a thing now.
The Texas Governors Mansion was under renovation when the arsonist set it ablaze. The last major construction project at the mansion was way back in 1914 to add a Conservatory and change the structure for a total of 25 rooms and 7 bathrooms.
So the Texas Governors Mansion was built well and had withstood the test of time. The mansion’s current residents, Governor Rick Perry and First Lady Anita Perry, were not at home when the fire started. In total forty Texas governors have occupied the mansion. It is the fourth oldest governor’s mansion in the United States that has been continuously occupied by a chief executive.
Memories of the Texas Governors Mansion will live on in everyone who ever saw such a great piece of architecture.
